Craving a Weekend Getaway? These D.C. Destinations are Exactly what you Need

Let’s face it—we could all use a vacation. Luckily, you don’t have to go far to enjoy the refreshing feeling of getting away from it all, as D.C. residents are surrounded by excellent options for a quick and memorable day trip.

Here are some of the best road trips to take around D.C. for a wonderful weekend escape.

Annapolis, Maryland

Driving for only 50 minutes will deliver you to this quaint town on the water. Its close vicinity to D.C. makes it the perfect place to spend a spontaneous few days. Annapolis is absolutely charming, with historic architecture and scenic waterfront views.

Annapolis is famous for its fresh seafood, large boats, and Naval Academy. Sealife lovers can explore the famous academy, check out the Maritime Museum, or catch a croquet game between the local rivaling teams. Visitors love to dine by the water at restaurants like Carrol’s Creek Cafe.

Brandywine Valley, Delaware

A two-hour drive north of D.C. will bring you to Delaware’s lovely Brandywine Valley. This gorgeous town in the countryside is full of bright flower blossoms and lush greenery. A rich history is alive for visitors to enjoy through many educational pastimes--especially their local tours.

Brandywine Valley has a strong arts culture, so don’t miss out on a visit to their renowned Museum of Art. Visitors here also enjoy simply soaking in the great outdoors by spending time in nature along the countryside.

Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore has a thriving art and cultural scene and is only an hour away from D.C. The city’s amazing food, shopping, and entertainment make it an ideal place for anyone looking to spend the weekend in a bustling area.

Home to the National Aquarium, a visit here is a must for people of all ages. Revered as one of the world’s best aquariums, there’s so much to see and learn.

The Bluebird Cocktail Room is a literary-based bar inspired by old Parisian lounges that entertained the likes of Hemingway and Dali. Their funky drink list and small, shareable plates make this the perfect evening destination. Tagliata is the most popular Italian restaurant in the city, serving up classics with a gourmet twist.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Nestled within the Blue Ridge Mountains, you can reach this scenic national park after driving only 75 minutes east of the capital. With 200,000 acres of pristine wildlife, Shenandoah Park will fulfill all your woodland desires.

These massive grounds contain 500 miles of hiking trails that wind through trees, hills, and valleys. If you’d prefer to drive, there’s a 105-mile road passing through the park that showcases rivers, streams, and waterfalls. Shenandoah Park also has fishing, mountain biking, and wildlife observation areas.
